On the rainy Saturday that officially kicked off the 1917 season, Boniface stepped into her new position. Wearing a high-waisted skirt and satin blouse, her hair done up in a stylish chignon, she took a seat at her new desk in the association’s executive headquarters, telling volunteers of the plan she had discussed with Gluck: to divide the city into one hundred districts, and match letters from those in need with others who lived near them. While most of the junior volunteers went along with the change unaware of any impropriety, the switch deeply irritated several more veteran leaders. Not only were they concerned about the idea of a twenty-two-year-old woman taking charge of the organization, but they were dismayed at the nepotism and the apparent unseriousness of the association it revealed. Several members quit in protest.

But one of these angered volunteers believed there was deeper corruption in the association office. She had seen more than just a lack of rigor in Gluck’s methods and wrote to the US Secret Service outlining her suspicions and some grave accusations against the leader. The tip would come back to haunt the Santa Claus Man.
